Yvonne Pedretti (EAST member 1997 – 2010)

Yvonne lived most of her life in Southend on Sea, Essex and this was often reflected in her work. Initially Yvonne trained in jewellery at Birmingham Art College and later in textiles at Goldsmiths College, London. In 1995 Yvonne became a full-time artist and teacher focusing on adult education and pursuing her passion for textiles.

Throughout her career Yvonne was fascinated by notions of transparency and translucency and how materials can be used to transmit and reflect light. Her stunning wall and sculptural pieces are formed by machine stitch, knitting, crochet and weaving techniques. Pieces from this series are included in several collections.

In 2008 Yvonne said of these pieces “they are a response to my lifelong passion for the sea. These strands are used to symbolise the overwhelming and unfathomed nature of life and the environment.”

Yvonne’s other interests included a love of the Essex and Suffolk marshes, travels through Indian and literature, in particular Jane Austen. Her other passion was her love of music and she was a regular attendee on the Essex jazz scene.

Sadly, Yvonne passed away in 2010 after a long battle with cancer. Her dignity, sense of mischief and generosity of spirit was unchanged throughout.

In a hugely generous act Yvonne left a legacy to EAST which has enabled the group to undertake many activities. These include exhibitions, workshops and other study events. For this the group remains eternally grateful.
