For the next EAST exhibition Bridging the Gap, I have studied trees.

The book I thoroughly recommend is titled “Meetings with Remarkable Trees” by Thomas Pakenham.

The chapter I enjoyed most was part five “Survivers – relics and ruins” it begins with a quote from Jane Eyre by Charlotte Brontë.

“You are no ruin, sir – no lightening struck tree: you are green and vigorous; plants will grow about your roots whether you ask them or not”.

Wonderful images of gnarled and bent trees were an inspiration for my work. The author says this book will not help you identify or cultivate them but to appreciate their personality.
