Didn’t we have a lovely time, the day we went to Messing!

Hands up everyone who sang along to the title – and who now has an earworm!

Seriously though, we did have a lovely time at our last meeting which took place in Messing near Colchester, Essex.

Two of the meetings we have in a year we call ‘Non-Anthea days’. These are the meetings that our Mentor, Anthea Godfrey, is not with us and so for these two we try to have a play day, a workshop, or a show and tell.

This time, one of our members, Lynda Monk, kindly offered to show us several ways of using Thermofax Screens with different mediums on different substrates.

We used Xpandaprint (otherwise known as EXpandIT or Puff Paint), Jacquard Puff Additive with printing inks, Caran D’ache water soluble crayons, Inktense blocks, Embossing powders and surprisingly, Markal Paintstiks – all with extremely good and very different results and effects.

The substrates used were Lutradur, muslin, linen and calico plus a range of papers: Khadi, watercolour, cartridge and tissue paper. There was also a selection of Caustic Soda Rust Dyed papers and some sublimation printed polyester fabrics.

A few of the members had not used some of these mediums or materials before and even those that were familiar with them had not really considered using them in their own work.

It turned out to be a very interesting day and we all came away very enthused with fresh ideas on how to make these techniques our own.
