Rock On with Julie Topsfield

Holidays to the Western Isles (aka The Outer Hebrides) inspired my series of wrapped rocks which are part of the EAST exhibition “Power of Stitch”.

Many of the beaches have natural areas of stone of varying colours, shapes and sizes and I became more drawn to them as time went on. Another native material to the islands is Harris Tweed and it seemed natural to combine the two.

The influences of the landscape and seascape as well as the Machair (wildflower meadow unique to the islands) and the unusual climate all found their way into stitch and the wrapped rocks.

I will share my ideas and how to interpret them into stitch at the workshop on the 6th June 2022 at the Babylon Gallery, Ely. Please see their website for more information and booking to complete your own wrapped and stitched rock.
