Libby Smith

Libby was born and brought up and educated in North Essex. She has enjoyed stitching and textiles all her life, whether making dolls clothes as a child, knitting and dressmaking as a teenager, or taking up creative textiles later whilst working in an office. During the 90's she took up City and Guilds Embroidery parts I and II which she completed in 1998 and after which she participated in Embroiderers' Guild textile tours of India and Thailand. Also at this time Libby became a member of EAST and also began giving workshops and talks.

Inspiration for past work has been family history, the poetry of Robert Herrick, the poetry of Emily Dickinson, the concept that clothing reveals an emotional history and guard books from the Warner Archive.

For Making a Point! Libby was inspired by her love of the English countryside and in particular the elements of cultivated landscapes, gardens and allotments.

"Over the past twenty-five years one of my greatest pleasures has been walking, whether it has been coastal paths in Cornwall, short walks in the Isles of Scilly or walks in the countryside of North Essex and Suffolk - all a wonderful source of inspiration for creative textiles. I mainly dye all my own threads and fabrics, use both hand and machine stitch as required by the piece of work and also like to use mixed media."
